Wood + Culture
Culture is about doing things the long way – which is absolutely not the same thing as transporting things a long way to sell them. Hittisau’s wood stays right here. And here, the long way means meticulously respectful forestry, felling at the right phase of the moon, patient, slow seasoning of the timber, and finally craftsmanship that blends tradition and innovation. Wood has so many fascinating forms and guises – in the forest; in the sawmills, in the joiners’ and turners’ and cabinetmakers’ workshops; fashioned for purpose in the new architecture in wood, and in fine furniture. This is culture with a purpose.
Our “Holz-Kultur-Weg” is a trail devoted to the lore and culture of wood, and runs partly in the village, partly just beyond. It introduces you to wood in Nature and in the forest, takes you to see historic wooden bridges, craftsmen in wood, and buildings of wood.
